An update:
Upon closer inspection of the search results from the base ER engine, I found that the "cube3" directories were NOT being accessed directly via cube3.com, but via an illegal copying of the directories files and content and subsequent storage on another server.

I contacted that ISP and the directories that "mirrored" cube3, as well as many VRML files....has been removed. The person responsable apologized and noted the files were copied as part of a research project over a year a go and that he "forgot" the directories were open..

The directories are gone, along with many many vrml files that were found at http://isnpx0168.in2p3.fr/fufuchat/objet/new/mondes/
all copied there without permission. I will see what is found via the ER search later today, ill assume the cube3 IP is not available for theyre usage unless they would like to contact us first-;)

Ive thanked the original reposter for his quick removal of the files, and intend no more actions against them.

I hope this incident will continue to alert all creators of IP that they should be mindfull of the current trend to make all content-NOT owned by technology companies- FREE - for the benefit of the commercial aspects of those companies only.

That's a step towards better relationship with content creators.

Just an idea (i've never been to any marketing school though) : they code an encryption tool and sale it for less than 500 € ( psychological price and price scale of most of the builders ), they add VISIBLE infos and link to builders site and works, we are then friends.
Such a low price regarding the market could be done in exchange of one or two scenes "given" to ER plateform, for example.

And they ( we ) can be a serious part in the actual 3D communities competition: they have thousands of builders waiting.

I took some ideas from Sarah with whom I agree totally :

For each scene or object, ER must show :

- the native name of the scene;
- the name of the author;
- a link to the scene in its native context;
- a link to the website of the author;
- on ER website a clear explanation about how to desindex a file;
- a list of websites that use the file;
- a possibility for the author to withhold his file from a site (the author decides if a website is a bad context for his work).

I know it's a difficult challenge.
But with these features, there would be nothing wrong with ER.

It's my own private opinion on the ER case

I have been looking over the Exitreality HELP and Instruction Notes..
Frankly- Its hard to follow.. BUT.
I do see attempts to control rights for usage on scenes and or objects.. \ Thats a good thing.;) How it works, how easy it works, and that it should not require a creators effort in any "extra exitreality "way, is important though.

I do not know how this works for the legacy content on the web in open wrl files that have until now been "mainly" accessable via an owners website and or embed html launch code.

I see many notations about "your launch buttons" and such.. but I cannot tell if anyone can make a new scene via "adding a button" to there sites- owned by them or another - and that if that constitutes a NEW SCENE- and one thats again open to others to derive new scenes from.

I dont want to be seen as "attacking" Exitreality . I do want some answers though, and I think many are going to want that information as well. Alot of what i seen them doing is great. But making/enabling "others" content to be mashable/ republishable with no need for owners permisions is not an acceptable business model in my opinion.

Right now I still cant tell what the browser does and does not allow "anyone" to do with and to my companies 3D IP Content.

Hello,
I posted an image and a comment on the larger groups ningsite.
I truly suggest- again- that the creators of 3dmedia now take a very verbal and public stand on the usage of the IP they create. Unlike the older medias , we do not currently HAVE well paid for Unions/ or Repersentative groups Lobbying for our IP rights.

For over a decade many have created IP and found that "waiting" for the "tech creators" to provide "protection schemas" for it- so that we could ALSO profit form OUR work- was a lost cause.

NOW that VRWORLDS and realtime 3d media are the last darling media of the Bubble players, our efforts need to be rewarded if we such desire.

Google and the 3D Warehouse will not pay for your childs college education.. will they?

Platform makers MUST not build a new media model, OVER the Property Rights of others.... web3.0 has 'just" begun in mass earnest... times now to make sure the dialog is BOTH ways...
up to you all. ive said this this all before....;)

Sorry to tell, but exitreality has NO spider looking to the file robots.txt : my raw logs confirm that.

Their so-called robot is a mozilla http browser : it does scan sites, and url but it NEVER looks to the robots.txt .

So despite being deeplinkers and content misusers, exitreality LIE to us.
Whatever they are ( Blaxxun and/or BS follower ) their philosophy is completely different from what we were used to with Blaxxun.

My avatar tells it all : stop fingering people. You are not that smart, and your communication skills are low !

NEWS

ParallelGraphics starts beta-testing of Cortona3D Viewer 6.0 Beta (previously known as Cortona VRML Client) and invites participants to take part in the beta testing program. Cortona3D Viewer is a fast and highly interactive VRML viewer that is ideal for viewing 3D models on the Web. It works as a VRML plug-in for popular Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome.

Cortona3D Viewer v. 6.0 Beta: What’s new

Unicode support

Cortona3D Viewer 6.0 provides full support for UTF-8 in VRML.

Localization of the user interface

Now the menus of Cortona3D Viewer can be easily translated into other languages by licensed users.

Latest Web browsers support

Cortona3D Viewer now supports Mozilla Firefox v. 3.0 and Google Chrome.

Phong lighting support

The support for Phong lighting model is provided for graphical cards supporting the shader model v. 3.0 and higher. Limited support for the shader model v. 2.x is also provided.

Improved performance: new DirectX renderer

- Support for real-time anti-aliasing (multisampling).
- Support idle-time anti-aliasing by means of Direct3D.
- Support for composite textures.
- Improved processing of textures and 3D primitives.

Improved installation procedure

The use of Microsoft Installer (MSI) allows for easier installation of Cortona3D Viewer within an enterprise and as a part of third party applications.

New VRML extensions

- The Transform2DEx node allows for positioning layers on the screen and specifying their size in pixels.
- The CompositeTexture3D and CompositeTexture2D nodes allow for adding composite textures to the 3D scene.
- The GradientBackground node allows for creating horizontal or vertical gradient background that is static relatively to the camera movements.

Changes in VRML Automation interface

- Pick method has been changed:
Layers without background: areas with no geometry are considered transparent for the picker.
One-sided surfaces: invisible side is ignored by picker.
Double-sided surfaces: the normal calculation is based on a visible side of the surface.
- New method of geometry bounding box calculation:
§ Now the bounding box can be calculated in global coordinates.

The FreeWRL team have put FreeWRL 1.21.2 on-line, with source, debian (.deb) and Apple OSX dmg downloads.

http://freewrl.sourceforge.net

Summary of changes:
- Verified MIME types for OSX and Linux plugins.

- Classic VRML/X3D parser:
- fixed memory error when IS fields were large.
- dramatic speed improvement in PROTO expansions; visible when large protos are
instantiated.

- XML parser:
- speed increase in parsing attribute values (one test shows 100x speed increase)
- PROTO expansion and Script invocation being reworked - may still have parse errors.
(in progress)

- Source Code:
- OpenGL Shaders code should compile on OpenGL 1.5 and above now (was 2.0 and above)
- CFuncs/sounds.h - include unistd.h on Linux machines.

- Misc rendering changes:

- Javascript, direct writing to scenegraph, boolean values were not correctly translated from
javascript to freewrl internal values.

- FaceSets with Color node, not taking material properties correctly (especially transparency)

- FaceSets, with RGB Color node, keep track of associated material transparency, and work through
color node changes.

- removal of temporary files - code has been reworked, as some temporary files (specific:
files retrieved by wget or curl) were not removed.

- initial work on CubeMapTextures.

- GeoPositionInterpolator - output value not translated to local spatial units. (fixed)
