Welcomes

Not finished had to hand in assignment before I got the chance to finish the model animation so she is a bit jerky and the weight's are not tweaked, Oh well I will get back to it soon.

hey thats awesome :)
overlaying the avatars is not hard onto flive footage in after effects ... if you use the avatars in .mb etc (probably is other ways also) but if taken from maya with no backgrounds then the background is transparent, you can just import your footage then import the avatar sequence rendered in maya on the layer above the footage ... that will work same as the images you just showed me :)

There are tools in after effects and a process to remove backgrounds also, if you ever interested to try I can show you how to do that.

"overlay the models onto it "

yes it sounds good ,

alas I havent the software to do it ,
but I had fun recently with a Thyme's avatar and some pics from my house

Hi Alain
Thank you for sharing below link, It has inspired me and just in time :)

I have been tossing around a script for a movie I need to make in a Video and Audio course I am enrolled in.
I been humming and stalling over live footage and lack of equipment and Actors!! Was starting to get worried! This movie was a wonderful inspiration what one can do with special effects and still keep the reality/film mode in play without a big blockbuster cast and crew … lol.
I was nearly going to bail out and use 3d models and do something clever like a real filmed background and overlay the models onto it ... but now I am going to have a go with the camera 
Thank you
Alana

Hello Alana , and all .

The movie is great ,
and I must admit :) that I invited Alana for MixED when I saw it :)

As said Steve , I want to watch more :)

Btw I feel funny to hear "stop motion" , because
my sons always use that word ,
and they dont knew what Mc Laren did using what is still for me "pixilation" .

"Voisins", 1953 !! below :

But I will not fight for a word , Thyme :)
and ... thanx for your work , Alana ,
it is good to see how many ways we have to use 3D .

Hi Thyme
Nice to meet you :-)
Thanks for your comments and for this great article ... I love your work.
Definitely a learning experience to build model like this and could not be replaced, just learning all the tools for this type of animation is irreplaceable, as in Trax, graphs and Blends ... Treasured knowledge and not so easy to Master...but in time time yeah all will be revealed.
The machine is a very intricate vessel but sometimes there are lessons to be had outside the machine ... I did a course last semester in "Drawing with the right side of the brain" they had us copying great pencil sketch artworks with only looking at the image upside down .... amazing outcome to this every image is picture perfect when you copy it from upside down, quiet a shock when you turn it up the right way.

Its all in the moving out of the left brain symbol system which has already symbolized all that it sees and recognizes, and it quiet awesome how much this comes out in ones art.
Cheers

Hi Alana thanks for sharing with us your alien animation.
You used stop motion animation for your alien?
I like BVH (motion capture) but I think it is good to continue learning the art of creating your own original animations too.
Amongst my favorite animations are Wallace and Grommet and others by Nic Park (which use stop motion) which are not at all realistic but which are very artistic.

I came across this 3 Top Cartoon Drawing Tips For Beginners

The first tip is: "Do not start with computers"

Although I don't agree with this (which would be impossible for learning how to do computer generated art), I very much agree with the sentiments that you have to take time to develop artistic skills, even when using computers.

I have some walk animations and the like already, need more but my bvh to vrml converter is acting up at the moment.
Alana Comment by Alana on August 10, 2009 at 8:43pm
Ill have to look into that ... what I did is I got so absorbed in my model two weeks went by when I did not look at the clock and I forgot to hand in 3 assignments!! I had just put the movement points into the animation timeline and was going to come back and do the timing after I checked it out in AE ... anyway AE woke me up! so after forgetting the time/day/week I emailed my professor freeeeking out! and he made me hand it in as it was!
Steve Comment by Steve on August 10, 2009 at 8:20pm
If maya supports it, you can use bvh files to give proper humanoid movements as well. then it just a matter of exporting to vrml in hanim or setbyvertextransform type animation.

ParallelGraphics starts beta-testing of Cortona3D Viewer 6.0 Beta (previously known as Cortona VRML Client) and invites participants to take part in the beta testing program. Cortona3D Viewer is a fast and highly interactive VRML viewer that is ideal for viewing 3D models on the Web. It works as a VRML plug-in for popular Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome.

Cortona3D Viewer v. 6.0 Beta: What’s new

Unicode support

Cortona3D Viewer 6.0 provides full support for UTF-8 in VRML.

Localization of the user interface

Now the menus of Cortona3D Viewer can be easily translated into other languages by licensed users.

Latest Web browsers support

Cortona3D Viewer now supports Mozilla Firefox v. 3.0 and Google Chrome.

Phong lighting support

The support for Phong lighting model is provided for graphical cards supporting the shader model v. 3.0 and higher. Limited support for the shader model v. 2.x is also provided.

Improved performance: new DirectX renderer

- Support for real-time anti-aliasing (multisampling).
- Support idle-time anti-aliasing by means of Direct3D.
- Support for composite textures.
- Improved processing of textures and 3D primitives.

Improved installation procedure

The use of Microsoft Installer (MSI) allows for easier installation of Cortona3D Viewer within an enterprise and as a part of third party applications.

New VRML extensions

- The Transform2DEx node allows for positioning layers on the screen and specifying their size in pixels.
- The CompositeTexture3D and CompositeTexture2D nodes allow for adding composite textures to the 3D scene.
- The GradientBackground node allows for creating horizontal or vertical gradient background that is static relatively to the camera movements.

Changes in VRML Automation interface

- Pick method has been changed:
Layers without background: areas with no geometry are considered transparent for the picker.
One-sided surfaces: invisible side is ignored by picker.
Double-sided surfaces: the normal calculation is based on a visible side of the surface.
- New method of geometry bounding box calculation:
§ Now the bounding box can be calculated in global coordinates.

The FreeWRL team have put FreeWRL 1.21.2 on-line, with source, debian (.deb) and Apple OSX dmg downloads.

http://freewrl.sourceforge.net

Summary of changes:
- Verified MIME types for OSX and Linux plugins.

- Classic VRML/X3D parser:
- fixed memory error when IS fields were large.
- dramatic speed improvement in PROTO expansions; visible when large protos are
instantiated.

- XML parser:
- speed increase in parsing attribute values (one test shows 100x speed increase)
- PROTO expansion and Script invocation being reworked - may still have parse errors.
(in progress)

- Source Code:
- OpenGL Shaders code should compile on OpenGL 1.5 and above now (was 2.0 and above)
- CFuncs/sounds.h - include unistd.h on Linux machines.

- Misc rendering changes:

- Javascript, direct writing to scenegraph, boolean values were not correctly translated from
javascript to freewrl internal values.

- FaceSets with Color node, not taking material properties correctly (especially transparency)

- FaceSets, with RGB Color node, keep track of associated material transparency, and work through
color node changes.

- removal of temporary files - code has been reworked, as some temporary files (specific:
files retrieved by wget or curl) were not removed.

- initial work on CubeMapTextures.

- GeoPositionInterpolator - output value not translated to local spatial units. (fixed)
